THANK YOU!

This is an interview with my friend Rob Baird, who is a creative director at Mother NYC. I have been fortunate enough to work on some great projects with him. PDN interviewed him for this month's issue and he said some really cool stuff about the state of advertising but also gave some very kind words about the times we have worked together. Thank you very much Rob. And thanks to all at Mother and Virgin Mobile for the amazing good times

FATHERSONS

A couple years ago, me and my buddy Anthony took a weird journey into the world of used copy machines in attempts to own our own zine press. This involved a lot of trips to Carson and a couple faxes from the Malaysian Consulate. After a while we just got a new Lexmark. Anthony has since moved on to much greener pastures such as Terri and Gary and The Crazy Band but I will always see him as a founding memeber of what is going to grow into a world wide institution. We have dusted the Lexmark off and we are back. 20 pages, 20 copies, $5. For life. For more info, well sort of, go here

Summertime

It was a little easy in the beginning but its starting to roar. This month saw two shoots for The Hollywood Reporter, LA Times and some awesome fashion stories with my team which I am finishing getting placed now. Thanks to the Forge and Nicci at Photogenics for their support on those. The release of WORK Magazine Issue IV, which I am sooooooooooo excited about working on, came this month. Check the link for videos of the awesome launch party and to check out an issue. Grab one if you can as the edition for this issue is limited. Coming up I have two shoots with the incredible folks at Mother NYC involving some of my favorite clients! Plus shooting with Red Bull, Black Book, Paper, Foam and more. And this is all in the next two weeks. Fathersons, my zine press is gearing back up for a revitalization, this time working closely with Luis Farfan and Justin Van Hoy. Also, I am two shows in the coming months in Los Angeles and New York. Seperate posts coming on those. Sleep is lacking but my gratitude for being able to do this is immense. It truly is a dream come true. Thanks everybody who works with me and works on my team. Much much appreciated.

Hot Venom

Shot these a while back, but just got the tears. Was another awesome shoot with MotherNY and Virgin Mobile. And yes that is a real live venomous rattlesnake. At one point it did strike the stick the handler was using to place the snake in the car. He then pointed out the glistening drops of venom laying on the seat. For a 5 foot rattler he did seem so cuddly for some reason.

Rave Down

Gearing up for a week of shoots. Been doing tons of organizing and rooting around through past shoots. Found these gems from a shoot I did a while back. That's Gretchen Mol. Yup. And Birdy Bell and Erin Fetherston. Really love the way these images came out. Thanks so much for the subjects bravery and helping us really create these characters. Just discovered a cool series by Paul Rowland that leans heavily on Richard Avedon's "In The American West". This book is pretty much my standard bearer for the classic portrait. So simple yet ressonant. Paul Rowland's work is a clever take on it. 5 years ago I started a series of direct remakes of Avedon's portraits. I shot them with a hard flash and the effects were from make up, not years of hard living. After 3 or 4 sittings everybody on the project got busy or distracted and it kind of drifted away. Seeing Pauls work made me go back and look at the images again. I've posted a few of them in the New Work section. Stay tuned for more.

Officiality

Just found out that my book Seven won an award at the AIGA Minnesota design show last weekend. Judged by four designers from across the country, Seven took the cake in the book design category. Thanks to designers Kai Benson and Andy Lund for all their hard work on this and to Ron Flemming and Brent Stickels at Yyes design for their additonal design support and for entering it in the competition!
